What length am I willing to go to in order to do the right by every child?
What length am I willing to go to in order to do the right
by every child?
This is a hard question as future teachers we are all struggling
with. The question of what it really takes to be a teacher and how far are we willing
to go for our students. I think teaching is a career you have to have a passion
for. It’s not easy work and the more and more I get into my major the more I realize
we aren’t just teachers. We are mothers, we are protectors, and we are often
even support systems to these students.
In my word it out creation I chose words that stood out to me
mainly from the YouTube video Our Culture Our Schools
Culturally Responsive Education in New York City. These
students should learn different cultures. They should learn what it means to
have a different identity. These things make a student feel welcome and
included in the classroom and outside of the classroom. Some of my ideas behind
my word it out were words like privilege, different, and normal. I think the
word privilege is important and not talked about enough in schools. There is privilege
in everything. The privilege to even
live in a country where we have freedom. The privilege to be a white women and
not have the same worries or struggles others go through. In the YouTube video
one of the students talk about how there isn’t many culture taught in school and
how it’s all about white culture. This is true for me too I never heard of many
historical figures being anything else but white. Most of the time these
historical figures we talked so highly of we then learn as we get older were
terrible people. The word different I think is important because each student
is different all having different needs and different support and learning. Another
strong word that I think is important and really stood out to me is normal. What
we see as normal practice in the classroom? Should this be considered normal?
We need change and we need improvement in the classroom if we have the opportunity
to bring world issues and recognize the lack of acceptance in the classroom why
shouldn’t we?
We as future teacher should go as far as realizing
there is need for improvement and a need for change. We should teach our
students to be open minded and more accepting of even the student they are
sitting next to. Because we teach the future of this world we should teach them
to be kind welcoming people.
Hey Hannah! I really enjoyed your blog post and i completely agree with what you have to say about how we never learn anything about different cultures. I have remembered about many different things about what i have learned throughout are history and i don't remember anything other than a short little remarks about people like rosa parks, martin luther king we were only talking about them for about 10 min and we never talked about them again we focus all of our energy on people who are white and their history. We should put more cultures into are studies and should be willing to open up students minds to all of are important people and what everyone has accomplished and not just what people say we should focus on. What would you do to open up kids prospectives into learning about new cultures? Students should be willing to accept everyone for who they are.
ReplyDeleteHi Hanna! I really liked reading your blog post this week! I agree with you about your word cloud and the thoughts you were saying about students learning different cultures. I think it is important for students to see themselves and their culture being represented. I does nothing for the students to continuously show one culture over and over so I think doing this can really help students learn something. Do you plan on implementing different cultures in your classroom and if so how do you plan on doing that? Overall, I really liked how your blog talked about the word different. Different cultures, different backgrounds, different students, etc. I think this is a really important word and is something that should be celebrated rather than tear people down for being different.
ReplyDeletei appreciate you commenting on my post. this was a very uplifting and positive comment so i appreciate the feedback. i do plan to incorporate culture in my classroom. i think the best and easiest way to have all kids learn about different cultures is through reading. I would love to have a small library in my classroom with books from different cultures and languages.
DeleteHi Hanna! I really enjoyed your blog this week, what really stood out to me is how we must have a passion for this profession to do our part as teachers, but the right way. Meaning being able to be a helping hand for these students, not just one but every single one of them. I see teachers as nurtures they raise and shape us to be successful in our education. Also, when growing up it was never a talk about learning about different cultures, if it was ever brought up it was only talked about for a few minutes. Coming from a Hispanic city and school you would expect us to learn about our cultures but we where only ever taught about white history. It was not until I was in 10th grade where I learned about Hispanic cultures but only from Spanish class. I think we have a lot to learn about our history no matter how disturbing it might be its important to know that everything happened and its our right to learn and acknowledge it.
ReplyDeletethank you for such positive feedback in your comment. i like how you used the word nurture. as future teachers we need to realize our job is to be nurturing and loving supportive figure for these kids.
DeleteHi Hanna! I really enjoyed your blog post this week. I agree with what you said about there being so much more to being teachers than teaching. It is our responsibility to educate our students about the world around them. I liked how in your "word it out" it included the words normal, different and privilege. I didn't think about how those words would be put in the classroom until you brought them up. It gave me a different view on how you saw this module and how you were thinking through the videos/ articles. A couple of words that were in my "word it out" were Relationships, and cared. I think as I worked through this module the relationship side of things stood out to me because students need to feel safe and comfortable in order to learn and be successful! Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeletethank you i really appreciate your comment. I agree students need to know more about the world around them. I like how you related my blog to yours with giving an example of your word it out. I like the word you used relationship. teachers and student have a unique relationship where teachers care so much.
